Hi, I am James. I am a Registered Psychological Counsellor with the HPCSA. I am based in Morningside, Durban, and I work with adolescents and adults navigating a wide range of life challenges.

I have a Masters degree in Psychology from the University of Pretoria, on the relationship between childhood emotional neglect and self-compassion in adults. Before this, I completed an Honours degree in a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Psychology at the University of KwaZulu Natal in 2007. In 2009 I did my Registered Counselling internship (specializing in Trauma) at Durban's McCord Hospital, and passed my board exam the following year. I have been practising in the field since 2010, and have been in private practice sine 2016.

I am currently completing my PhD at the University of Pretoria, focusing on the power of self-compassion in treating adverse childhood experiences.

My approach to counselling is warm, grounded, and practical. I aim to create a space where you feel comfortable to explore what you’re going through at your own pace, without pressure or judgement.

I work from an evidence-informed perspective, integrating elements of emotional regulation, self-compassion, and insight-oriented work. While childhood emotional neglect is an area of particular interest in my work, it is not the only focus — I support clients with a broad range of concerns.

These may include anxiety, stress, trauma, anger, grief, relationship challenges, and feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about direction in life.

My goal is not to create long-term dependence on counselling, but rather to support you in developing the insight, awareness, and tools needed to move forward more confidently and independently.
